Treatment of Lower Back Pain

Rest and Heat Application are two things that are recommended. Muscle strain is the cause of most cases of back pain. Increased irritation and strain to the spine and muscles that surround and support the spine needs to be avoided. Bed rest, if prolonged, can lead to increased back pain. Heat packs, heating pads or other devices to apply heat to the lower back can help ease the pain and discomfort of lower back pain. A hot bath is often a good pain relief solution.

Exercises that strength and flexibility of back muscles can be important factors in helping you recover from back pain. Care and consideration must be taken to avoid excessive strain while you are involved in exercise.

Many widely used treatments for Chronic Back Pain have been shown to be less than effective. This has lead to concerns about their prevalence and increased use.

Lower Back Pain Symptoms

Diagnosis of Lower Back Pain

Suffers of back pain should describe their symptoms as clearly and with as much detail as possible. After a physical examination and observation of your ability to perform various movements some of the following might be prescribed:

- X-rays
- Discography
- Computerized Tomography (CT)
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Electrodiagnostic Procedures (including electromyography (EMG)
- Nerve conduction studies and evoked potential (EP) studies
- Bone Scans
- Thermography
- Ultrasound Imaging
- Some of these procedures are non-invasive such as X-rays, CT and MRI’s. Most are very expensive and involve an invasive injection procedure.
